Purpose

Tires are really important.  Good tires, especially ones suited to your driving conditions, are even more important.
 

Most important is a set of good tires.  The local favorites are Hakkappilittas from Finland.  They seem to provide better lateral grip than the others on the market.  Now the big question is which flavor of Hakkas -- 1's, 9's or 10's?  No good consensus yet.
