Differences between
Canadian and US Foxes
On this page, I hope
to outline any and all differences between the Foxes sold in Canada and
those in the USA. I have never actually sat in a Fox from the USA,
so my observations here will be made primarily on what I have read, seen
in dealers' lots and heard rumors about. If anyone out there would
be willing to help me out with this section, I'd really appreciate it!
So, on to the differences. I have divided this up into several areas:
Engine
-
All Foxes sold in North
America had a 1.8L [1781 cc] 4-cylinder, 4-stroke, SOHC, gasoline engine
-
1987-1990 Foxes in both
the US and Canada had the CIS fuel injection system
-
1991-1993 Foxes in both
the US and Canada had the Digifant II system
-
Except California cars
- they had the Digifant I system
-
Early US Foxes had an
upshift indicator
-
Early US Foxes had an
OX light, which required a mileage counter. Because of this, early
US Foxes had a 2-piece speedometer cable; 1 cable went from the transmission
to the mileage counter, and the other from the mileage counter to the speedometer.
Interior
-
US Foxes had "automatic"
front seatbelts
-
The shoulder belt is
attached permanently to the door, with a winding mechanism at the other
end, beside the seat [on the driver's right side, and the passenger's left]
-
The lap belt is manual
-
1987 & 1988 US Foxes
still had "normal" front seat belts
-
Some (maybe all) US
Foxes from 1990 also had manual front seat belts (Thanks Mark)
Exterior
-
I believe the exterior
was not different between the Canadian and US models
-
The DTRL on late Canadian
models are probably the only difference
-
Early 1987 and some
1988 Foxes in both the USA and Canada had 2 additional towing hooks integrated
into the front bumper, for a total of 4.
Options
-
Body styles
-
1991-1992 Canadian Foxes
were only available in the 2-door style, the US had 2-door and 4-door styles
-
1993 Foxes were only
available in the US
-
Canada saw an option
package called "Arctic Fox" on the 1987-1990 Foxes. I have only seen
this on a handful of Foxes, they were either a light metallic blue or a
metallic champagne, and were all 4-door models. If anyone knows what
this package entailed, please let me know.
-
Canada had a "Fox GTS"
available, did the US also?
-
The USA saw a package
called "Fox Polo" on 1993 models, I think it was limited to 2-door models
only.
-
Help here please
Other
-
Late Canadian Foxes
had DTRL [DayTime Running Lights], which can be easily disabled
