Big thanks to Conrad Baudin from Pretoria, RSA for telling me about the Volkswagen Fox in South Africa.
Here's what Conrad was able to tell me:
The following from memory only - certainly not guaranteed 100% accurate!
The Fox had only one facelift during its life here, in roughly 1990. As you'll note, it used the nose of the Golf rather than the more expensive Jetta I square-eyed look. (SA and European Golfs never had the rectangular headlights some Rabbits seemed to have, nor did they have the big 5mph bumpers.) You'll see in the picture of the blue Fox that the nose is pretty much original Golf I. The facelift - for both Citigolf and Fox - saw big one piece plastic bumpers added incorporating the front air dam with similar ones at the rear. The front wings (fenders?) were modified to accept these. The grille projected at the lower edge to meet these. If you look closely you'll see that the smaller inboard driving lights on the original are placed higher than on the modified model. Foxes had 1300, 1600 or 1800 ("Sport") carburetted engines (they were never fuel injected - and only one Citigolf was, the now defunct CTi). Early 1300's (I think) had 4 speed gearboxes but 5 speed boxes were otherwise across the board. Right at the end of the Fox's life here a stripped down baseline model, the Fox Trippa, arrived and I believe that the 1300 was 4 speed. (The Trippa was sold in any colour - as long as it was white or red - and had white enamelled steel wheels.)
