The newest Gol

Starting in late June 2000, the VW Gol in Brazil has a new engine option.  A 1.0L 16v turbo!

Here are some quick specs on the engine:
• 1.0L (yes, only 999 cc) 4-cylinder mounted longitudinally
• 16v (DOHC, 4 valves per cylinder)
• Turbocharged & Intercooled!  [1.4 kg/cm2 of boost]
• 82 kW (~112 HP) @ 5500 RPM
• 155 Nm (~114 lb-ft) of torque @ 2000 RPM
• 0-100 km/h = 9.5 seconds
• As best I can decipher from the somewhat cryptic translation Babelfish offers:
• The engine has a variable valve timing system similar to Honda's VTEC, except simpler and less expensive in design
• The engine is fuel injected (Bosch Motronic M3.8.3) with a knock sensor and the exhaust valves contain sodium for better cooling (like Audi's turbo exhaust valves)
• The transmission has taller 4th and 5th gears, compared to those used with NA 1.0L 16v engines
• The turbo is an "Allied Signal G12" [the official VW do Brasil site lists it as a "Garrett G12"]
• The car weighs only 996 kg!
• Also notice that the exhaust is on the driver's side of the engine (not on the passenger's side, like on North American Foxes)
