This car is a 1981 VW Gol LS 1.6. It's an improved version of the 1980 VW Gol L 1.3.
The greatest difference between these cars is an increase in the engine's displacement (from 1285 to 1584 cubic centimeters). Public response to the first Gol with the 1.3L aircooled engine was so minimal (due to the underpowered engine), that in 1981 the 1.6L was introduced. Both of these engines were aircooled and based on the engine out of the VW Beetle. The engine in the Gol was front-mounted and drove the front wheels.
As you can see in these pictures, the spare tire is located over the engine!
