In North America the only engine available was a 1.8L [1781 cc] 8v SOHC 4-cylinder naturally-aspirated fuel-injected gasoline engine, mounted longitudinally, and mated with a 4-speed or 5-speed manual transmission, only in a front-wheel-drive configuration. The engines' fuel injection ranged from basic CIS in 1987 Canadian models, CIS-E between 1987-1990, and Digifant II from 1991-1993 (Digifant I in California). A very few were sold with automatic transmissions, but they are so few that this information never made it into broshures or other official literature. Contrary to popular belief, the 1.8L 8v is identical to that of Golfs and Jettas of the time, it is merely rotated 90 degrees (the lesser output is attributed to a restrictive gasket in the exhaust system).
Air conditioning was an option, but power steering, ABS, power windows and power door locks were never available. A "Wolfsburg edition" was also sold, but unlike the earlier Volkswagens badged "Wolfsburg", the Fox was still built in Brazil, and not at the Wolfsburg plant in Germany; the "Wolfsburg edition" Foxes were merely a styling and options package.
Styling differences exist between 1987-1990 and 1991-1993 models, involving different headlights and taillights and a few minor interior changes. All three body styles were available in the earlier (1987-1990) body style, but only the 2-door and 4-door models were available from 1991-1993. The hatchback and pickup versions from Brazil were never sold in North America.
