The term has been retroactively applied with a certain consistancy to Europe's Catholic cathedrals which often united architecture, visual art, and - during the mass, music, storytelling and performance into a single work of art with a single purpose. In the context of the cathedral every component is functional in the elevation of the soul, the towering architecture is meant to be conceptualized as a bridge between earth and heaven - the layout of the basilica directs the congregation towards the apse where ritual is conducted. Visual artwork helps patrons to visualize biblical figures and events, and the coloured light produced by stained glass is to be concieved of as a light of spirit that fills the church's space. The new gestamkunstwerk is the shopping mall, a total work of art - of architecture, graphic design, and music which destroy's the patron and produces insanity.
