D-TRASH Records is pleased to interview one of our older! bands ALL OUT
ASSAULT. We talk with Tony and .miQ today for a catch up interview in
2009 focu sing
on their sole release for D-TRASH, released in 2000, back when the label was
still hosted online by the members.xoom site.
The disc did not affect mass global change with their music, even being
called "mediocre indie rock" in an unfortunate review in TERRORIZER Magazine
UK.
However looking back at the disc, we remember its role in our roster and all
that which was classic about the disc, like the chorus of "Defeat" or the
catchiness of the song "EveryDay = Shit".
This, the first of our spotlight series is on DTRASH020: ALL OUT ASSAULT:
TACTILE FORCE.
TONY aka LOWTONEZ (ALL OUT
ASSAULT) // GUITARS, PRODUCTION, VOCALS (VOX IN NEW ERA)
Q: What do you remember about being a member of the band back in the early days when you were writing "TACTILE
FORCE".
A: Well I remember Roy (Ohmmz) and I were always jamming wanting to write kick ass tunes, drinking beer, making lots of samples, now that
I look back I wish we would have taking our time with the first album.
Q: Do you think the album was rushed?
A: Yes very much so...
Q: What were you rushing for... or was it just that you did an album and quickly moved on without going back to it much?
A: I think we rushed because we were trying to find the sound we wanted.
Q: Technically where would you call ALL OUT ASSAULT's home base city so to speak?
During the eras
A: Callander Ontario Canada, my house, we were always making lots of noise,
and the police were called a few times!
Q: Was that / is that near Stoney Creek, Ontario Canada? I remember meeting you guys in person around the time you were all enrolled in a Music Arts? Recording Canada studio program?
A: No, It's near North Bay Ontario.
Q: I remember, you guys I thought of you as "AOA from North Bay"
What was it like being digital hardcore in a somewhat Northern town of less population
A: I like to call it North Gay.
It was fun, everyone thought we were nuts.
Q: Did you play often in North Bay?
A: No, we would only play at my house, and once in Ottawa.
Q: What was your favorite track from the TACTILE FORCE disc
A: My favorite Track Hmm, I would have to say its Cheese
("Cougar [cheez]"). Q: That song is definitely a song that someone who doesn't know AOA would have to know the song is like an inside joke... Or else they would think you suck if you were serious about playing that style in the first part of the song! LOL.
A: Yes, it was kind of a joke track, but it was so much fun.
Q: There should have been a video for it!
A: I agree. I do have 2 videos that I made but have never digitized.
Q: 2 videos of what. Do you mean those bonus tracks "The Score"? A: No,
I don't think you heard them. 2 tracks that we did add to the album.
Q: There was one, "Time To Stand"?
A: Yes that is one.
Q: What was the format for a live AOA gig. Who did what in the band for a live gig.
I have the video of that still, Time To Stand, pretty good video production.
A: Ster did vox and I operated the keyboard, turntable, and 505 Ster broke the turntable.
Q: Yeah I remember seeing you guys in Ottawa
From what I remember there was a drunken Ster causing quite the ruckus that night.
A: Wow I found it hard, we were not
ready for it. Yes, I think Ster was a little drunk and excited.
Q: I remember he broke a TV that night!
A: He smashed it on the floor, and someone at the show made art with it wile everyone played ...
Q: Next year, the "TACTILE FORCE" album will become 10 years old.
Having been released in 2000.
A: Wow that old eh, you can tell!
Q: Did you get much of a following to the TACTILE FORCE album.
A: Yeah, I guess a little. I don't understand why, I think we sucked, If we would not have rushed it might have sounded a hell of lot better ...
Q: What cracks me up is how on the band's first album
there's' song titles like "More From The Masters."
Not from a band who released 5 albums and is a known band!
A: I know, Sterling was a little high on the album.
Q: That, whatever I was describing about the disc there, that was Ster?
The "We rock!" buzz
A: Yes. He is a great artist don't get me wrong, but he was the one who was rushing us all the time.
Q:
The "TACTILE FORCE" album is now available online on iTunes to buy the mp3s. Or you can as always download the disc for free on the dtrashrecords.com site. Which of the two do you recommend
A: For myself, I bought the disc and I still have it somewhere, I would have to say iTunes.
Q: You bought it from ITunes?
A: No, I bought it from mp3.com [back in the day].
Q: I remember All Out Assault during those times could
definitely be considered 'an mp3.com band'.
A: You really think so, well thank you, I hope that was a compliment ha.
Q: For what it's worth my bands were mp3.com bands at the time too
Now it's myspace.com bands I guess
A: Fun times ...
Q: What happened between then and now with the band
A: Well I worked out of town all the time. And went through a messy
divorce and had to stop...
Q: What was the Riot Gear disc all about
Was it ever given an official release or was that just demos floating around.
A: RIOT GEAR was just songs we could not fit on the old album, they
were ok songs, but if you ask me not worthy
there was 1 track I spent over a year on, and at the end Dave and Ster fucked
the time on it up.
Q:How many tracks are we looking at for the next album.
A: I would like to see at least 12 to 14 tracks
I would really like to send you those videos for you D-TRASH site, and you can do what you want with them.
Q:What will new AOA sound like. Who's in the band now.
A: I am having the best time of my life writing the new album, and I hope
you like it. It will sure sound a lot different, we have re-find our playing skills, also it is only Ohmmz and myself,
a 2 man band. We have new equipment, and I have the balls to sing, scream, what ever it takes.
Q: Cool
what will the disc be called?
A: Ohmmz and I have not decided yet. Ohmmz is working on the
artwork. There is going to be lots of heavy guitar (live) as well as drums.
It sounds clean, crisp with some thought put into it. We are taking our time on this one.

.MIQ SCHMIDT (ALL OUT ASSAULT, NOCORE, ZYMOTIC) // PRODUCTION, GUITARS,
PROGRAMMING
Q:
What do you remember about being a member of the band back in the early days when you were writing "TACTILE
FORCE".
A: I met these guys while taking a crash course in audio engineering back in 00'. they were renting a house down the road where we had a number of wicked guitar and vocal recording sessions, and spent some time remixing. it was during this time
I got to meet the rest of the crew and we conspired for future collaborative
efforts.
Q:
What was your part on the TACTILE FORCE disc? A: I co-produced,
recorded the end guitar and did backing vocals for the final track (Defeat).
We also did a Sniper remix (Time to Stand) and produced 'The Score' (the
latter 2 appeared on the following RIOTOUS EP.)
Q: Tell us about your involvement in the RIOTOUS EP!
Ahh. That was our follow up - as I came in late in the game on the previous.
It was a series of the latter tracks I'd co-produced as well as some I'd made myself.
Living in different cities and the passing of time lead to this eventual compiling of tracks.
Q: What part did the other guys have in it? A:
Ster and I worked on 'The Score' and 'Sniper/Time To Stand'.. Tony did 'Works'.
Q: You did the artwork for the disc?
A: Yeah I did the back cover for "TACTILE .. " and the "RIOTOUS"
art.
Q: What was your approach for putting the art together for it. There is riot police
and lots of pseudo revolution ish themes in the insert. Were AOA
necessarily a political band?
A: I think it was just the meme of it all - in your face like.
Certainly lots to confront in terms of political issues...
Q: It was the times? The 1999 Seattle WTO riots, etc.
A: Yeah, that time before 9/11 when it actually seemed like a difference
was being made with all of that stuff. But yeah.. the times totally
times change years later!!
Q: Yeah so TACTILE FORCE will be 10 years old next year... A: Crazy.
Q: Do you think it should be given a corporate re-release on Sony
Complete with gold-plated master pressings with the 2nd disc has remixes by Farrell and P Diddy. And Akron and all those other DJ losers
A: Remixed and mastered.. hell yeah
totally. Yeah going all skreamo to gabber beats.
Q: Tony and Roy are working in a new incarnation of the band right now, working on a new album
A: Awesome
maybe I should get in on a remix . Q: Do it up!
A: (*nods) But now.. I must sleep.
Q: You are Ben Kenobi and the new ALL OUT ASSAULT V2009 is Luke Skywalker... What do you say to Luke before he goes off on his quest
into the 2010's!.
A: "You must do what you feel is right, of course."
