"For a while now, D-Trash Records is seen as the best ( if not the only) alternative to Alec Empire's DHR. Something the latter is only to eager to acknowledge: the 3-cd DIY Underground Compilation features almost every D-Trash artist with one song or more, with D- Trash labelhead and more commonly known: the Daddy of the Underground, Schizoid taking up an impressive five songs. D-Tech releases have been slow however, with only one professionally printed disc in their catalogue. But of course this isn't where D- Trash's weight in the digital hardcore underground lies. It's in the 31-piece D-Trash cd-r catalogue. With no overhead costs for cd- pressings and little-to-no budget for promotions the D-Trash artists never have to take financial considerations in mind when producing their tracks. And it shows: the cd-r catalogue does not only have the widest variety of digital hardcore styles (it's not all breakbeats and noise you know...) it's also pushing forward in terms of innovation. And that's where this disc from Exist steps in nicely. "The Tension and The Darkness" lets itself be listened to as if it were a soundtrack to a bad acid trip. All the sounds are warped and twist horrendously throughout the songs. Song structure is abandoned in favor of atmosphere. Heavy atmosphere. Turn the volume up, sit down on the couch, let the music flood you and you will find yourself actually asking: "Am I tripping, or not?" And this is where this disc succeeds beautifully: even though not all of the songs are as established and nine songs seem a little too much of a good thing, it was never meant to be entertainment for the ear. It is entertainment for the mind. press |
