for DTRASH31 - "The Tension And
The Darknesst"
Reviewed by Gunhed @ wetworks-ezine
"Exist is the collaborative
output of J. Schizoid and .Miq. These two guys really know how to abuse
their various electronic machines to produce some seriously deranged
music. It's a plethora of broken drum loops, break beats, 8-bit synth
lines, and enough movie/media samples to leave even the best of movie
trivia nerds scratching their heads.
While many of the songs have a dark, serious tone to them, Exist never
keeps things overly serious for long and finds a nice middle ground
between laughter and sorrow which makes the disc even more enjoyable and
interesting. At times, it sounds like they turned on all their machines at
once, hooked up the sampler to the VCR and let it record and twist every
single sample that came out of it while they took a sledge hammer and beat
the shit out of their equipment.
Just when you think you have a grasp on the music, J. Schizoid and .Miq
throw in a random piano melody, video game rhythm or some other form of
unexpected chaos.
The Tension and the Darkness is a very interesting listen, but prolonged
exposure might leave you insane and drooling over your straight jacket. A
mixture of digital hardcore, industrial, noise and too many other styles
to mention, Exist presents a great departure from everything else.
